Schools & Young People — MATT Worldwide

Schools & Young People

Children spend the school day wound up. We breathe 20,000 times a day without giving it a second thought, and yet it’s telling our minds we need to be alert and on.

Mouth breathing is our primitive signal for fight and flight — we do it whilst talking, running around playing, and yet it’s telling our brains to get ready for fight or flight. Shallow chest breathing, holding our breath, sighing and yawning are all tell-tale signs of dysfunctional breathing. Your body is telling you your breathing is out of balance.

It shows up as fidgeting, poor focus, tiredness, and an inability to settle after lunch. Spending our days and nights activating our stress response keeps us at a low but chronic stress level, affecting our sleep, our digestion and our focus. With breath assessment and retraining we can improve our daily functional breathing, which activates our rest & digest response, calming the mind and body.

I teach one breath to settle the mind and one breath to sharpen it.It takes seconds to implement and requires no equipment.

Most parents find they need it more than the kids do.

How it runs

This works best as a short programme rather than a single visit. Typically once a week over three weeks, delivered whole school, year group or class by class, so students actually build the habit rather than just hearing about it.

Pitched per age group, primary through senior. Staff sessions available alongside.

Parents evenings

An hour in the evening where parents learn the same techniques their children are learning, so the language matches at home. Most parents find they need it more than the kids do. From there, some families choose to carry on privately at home. That’s always an option, never an expectation.

I met Matt at eighteen during a pretty hectic time in my life. We got chatting and quickly became good mates. He’d help me with ideas for my business. I’d leave Matt’s place feeling unstoppable, ready to have a crack at life. Having someone like Matt as a friend and a mentor is a big factor in why I have the mindset I do today. Whenever my business was in a disaster and I was stressed out in my mind, I would reach out and chat to Matt for a fresh perspective. He’d always make time. He’s got a way of being extremely open, and he makes it feel really easy to chat about anything. A great listener and a great sharer.
